What they never tell you is that even in the christian community there is widespread disagreement among Bible scholars about the book of Genesis! There are many Hebrew scholars who say there is no reason to interpret Genesis the way these 'fundies' do! There are many reliable historical facts in the old testament, but Genesis chapter 1 DOES NOT tell us exactly how the world was created. There is a book called Historical Genesis by Richard Fischer, and I would encourage anyone to read it.
